Blair Castle Hydro

Type of Project

Hydro Scheme

Location

Blair Atholl

The Blair Castle Hydro Electric Scheme was originally commissioned in 1908, supplying electricity to the 13th-century castle through three 25kW turbines, originally supplied by Gilkes and Gordon. These turbines were later removed in 1951 with the arrival of the national grid.

Atholl Estate appointed Campbell of Doune to reinstate 89kW hydro-electric scheme, making use of much of the Edwardian-installed infrastructure, including the 400mm-diameter cast-iron penstock, ponds, and 3.5km of open hill drain.

Campbell of Doune oversaw the project from conception to commissioning. They were involved in assessing the condition of the historic hydro infrastructure, designing new hydro intake structure with silt trap, and making modifications to the existing powerhouse building to incorporate a new single Pelton Gilkes turbine.
